Thales Angenieux and Cooke Optics collaborate to incorporate /i Technology
Partnership enables camera ops to capture vital metadata which aids post process
NAB 2010, Las Vegas – 12 April 2010
Cooke Optics Ltd., the premier manufacturer of precision lenses for the motion picture industry, and Thales Angenieux, the leader in the design and development of the most prestigious zoom lenses in the film world, has announced a groundbreaking partnership agreement in which Thales Angenieux will incorporate Cooke’s /i Technology into its range of lenses.
/i Technology enables film and digital cameras to automatically record key lens and camera data for every film frame shot and provide it to post-production teams digitally. The technology streamlines both production and post, saving significant time and costs and eliminating guesswork, while enabling greater creative freedom.
The /i capability is now built into an external box that will connect to the lens. Moving forward, i/ Technology will be built into Thales Angenieux’ new lens designs.
“/i Technology is an astounding development for our industry and one which drives it forward. We are delighted to work with Cooke to incorporate this technology into our lenses, in order to advance in the streamlining of the film production process,” said Philippe Parain, Managing Director, Thales Angenieux, France.
“We have great respect for Thales Angenieux and are thrilled to welcome them to the growing /i family,” said Les Zellan, Chairman, Cooke Optics.
Thales Angenieux is the latest in a distinguished group of companies to adopt /i Technology; the growing list includes Aaton, Avid, ARRI, Avid, Cinematography Electronics, CMotion, Dalsa, Mark Roberts Motion Control, Preston Cinema Systems, RED, The Pixel Farm, Service Vision and The Foundry.
Visitors to NAB 2010 can find out more by visiting the Cooke Optics and Thales Angenieux booths during the show.
In addition, Cooke will be demonstrating its new 5/i Prime lenses and the Panchro by Cooke Series, which were launched at IBC 2009, as well as the iconic Cooke 4/i Prime lenses.
Cooke 5/i named 2009 Product of the Year by Film and Digital Times

Les Zellan astonished cinematographers at IBC by introducing Cooke 5/i primes as well as the anticipated new Panchro /i set.
All lenses in the new 5/i Prime Lens Set are T1.4. Focal lengths:18, 25, 32, 40, 50, 65, 75, 100 and 135mm—designed for all PL-mounted film and digital cameras. They use /i Technology, which is Cooke’s open-architecture lens data system. The illuminated focus ring means no more Maglite cigars on night shoots. Tiny LEDs illuminate the focus scales on both sides of the lens, and are dimmable with a control box or wirelessly with a Preston Cinema System FIZ, cmotion control or with a Transvideo Evolution Monitor.
